Children allergies on the rise
The rate of food allergies among children continues to rise. A recent report from the Center for Disease Control and prevention in the U.S. discovered that 5.1% of children now have food allergies, which has increased from 3.4% between 1997 and 1999.
The study also found that skin allergies, such as eczema also increased over the same period from 7.4% to 12.5% percent.
From a personal experience, my daughter started showing signs of eczema about a month after she was born. For 2 and half years we used a variety of creams, washes and cortisone ointments recommended by my dermatologists and local doctor in order to try to alleviate the irritations on her skin.
It wasn’t until I read up on the ingredients that are in some baby washes, shampoos, bubble baths, soaps and moisturizers that I started to question whether they might be causing her more harm than good.
So I decided to try my own experiment. I stopped using all the baby products that were recommended and switched to Goats milk body wash, a shampoo and conditioner that have no harmful toxic ingredients and a natural soap that only contained 3-4 ingredients.
Within a week the eczema started clearing up and in a month it was completely gone. She was 3 years old at the time. She is now 8 years old and has perfect skin with no signs of eczema.
Whilst this approach worked for my daughter I can’t guarantee that it will work for others. All I know is that chemicals are not good for our bodies or the earth. Natural, chemical free products are a safer alternative.
The findings from the Center for Disease Control and prevention study also indicated that there are also increases in food allergies in recent years. The reason for this is unknown, however if you use logic and a little research into food additives, you can begin to guess why this is happening.
There are many contributing factors, pollution, fertilizers, manufacturing processes, etc. Many food additives (E numbers) and processed foods also contain toxic substances, which are often used to reduce costs. Some of us are more susceptible to allergies than others, and only small quantities can affect you without realizing.
Some food additives can cause allergies or aggravate a variety of conditions, including asthma, hyperactivity, and skin ailments to name a few. Many of us don’t take note of the ingredients in our food.
I only started noticing about 3 years ago. During that time I’ve made a big effort to purchase only food that I know is healthy. We all have the right to know what we are eating and I want to make sure that what my children and family eat is healthy and safe. To make my life easier I came up with the Chemeleon Food additive guide which I use when I shop to find out if the additives in the food I purchase are safe or not.
Products that I use at home:
Billy Goat soap,MooGoo body wash, Organic Care Shampoo and Conditioner.
